The Twist

If you want to find out what your customers want, go see what they need. This is the founding principle of our product development process.

Back in 2002 when we began our product research, our target customers were electricians who needed training to keep their professional licenses current. We spent hundreds of hours with electricians who didn’t mind us showing up at their homes at six in the morning and riding with them in their vans, observing how they worked. We asked them open-ended questions such as, “What do you love about your job?” and “What do you hate about your job?”

We heard a laundry list of items, but the one that bubbled to the top was training. In addition to the training required to keep their licenses, these electricians wanted to advance themselves by learning about the 8,000+ new products introduced every year in their industry.

This research showed us more than just the need for online continuing education for electricians. It showed us the need for a twist on the traditional learning management system (LMS) by including relevant product information at the moment of learning. So we created an entire online ecosystem of learning that delivers training, tracking, and rewards to the entire supply chain of the electrical industry, from manufacturers and suppliers, through distributors, to associations and end-user skilled professionals.

We took these insights and applied a modern, customer-driven development process to launch BlueVolt.com in the electrical industry. Soon, thousands of electricians completed their continuing education requirements (CE/CEU) online. When recognized industry leaders such as Philips, NJATC and IMARK took note of the growing demand for online training they established their own successful training and marketing programs powered by BlueVolt. Our twist on the traditional LMS business model was thoroughly tested and validated and by 2008 BlueVolt was established in the electrical industry as a cost-effective and forward-looking training and marketing tool. Today, as our early customers continue their success with BlueVolt, we see sustained accelerated adoption throughout the electrical industry.
